Can you share your personal and professional story?
?
I have been a strategic and productive thinker from a young age, fostering environments and relationships conducive to ongoing success in development. My professional journey began with assisting small businesses' IT departments in Holly Springs, North Carolina. This early experience provided a foundation in technical skills and problem-solving. As I grew, I transitioned to a more people-focused approach, understanding how individuals are wired so that I could create the most effective teams and outcomes.
Since high school, I have nurtured my passion for creating spaces for youth to voice their opinions, especially when I felt my own voice wasn't loud enough. Growing up in a town where I was often the first black kid to achieve various milestones, I worked hard to ensure that other students of color had opportunities to join me at the table. Working alongside others to ensure the success of our Black Student Alliance, helping establish our Equity Committee, serving on the Superintendent's Student Leadership Committee, and being an appointed student representative on the State of North Carolina 's Task Force for Safer Schools, my efforts to amplify marginalized voices started locally but soon gained recognition across the state.
This commitment to making a difference has followed me to every community I've engaged with, including at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University , the largest historically black college and university (HBCU) in the country. At NC A&T, I continued to build on my passion for advocacy and community engagement, contributing to initiatives that support underrepresented groups and foster inclusive environments, such as the N.C. A&T Exceptional Males in Business (formerly known as the Black Male Initiative) and through various work in the Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement on behalf of the university. My education and experiences at NC A&T have equipped me with a unique skill set that combines strategic thinking, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of diverse communities. I have been taught not what to think, but how to think.
My journey as a first-generation college student has been marked by ongoing growth and development. I am committed to advocating for underrepresented individuals while driving positive change in every role I undertake. I continue to pave a path for myself through the guidance of God and what I believe is human nature in understanding the importance of everyone's story as an individual. As I begin to look for what's next in my professional story, I look forward to gaining experience in developing individuals through Human Resources.
What key moments in your life have led you to where you are today??
Several key moments in my life have led me to where I am today. Graduating from Apex Friendship High School, a predominantly white institution, was a significant milestone. In addition to being one of the few black graduates, I was also acknowledged as the first black homecoming king for the high school. It's noteworthy that in 2021, we are still experiencing individuals of color achieving things for the first time. Being one of the few black students in such an environment presented unique challenges and opportunities. It taught me the importance of representation and advocacy, inspiring me to create spaces where underrepresented voices could be heard.
Attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the largest HBCU in the country, was another pivotal moment. This experience immersed me in a community rich in culture and history, significantly different from my high school environment. It provided me with a deeper understanding of my identity and the importance of supporting and uplifting marginalized communities. However, my time at NC A&T also exposed me to systemic shortcomings, such as the underfunding of HBCUs by the government. Witnessing these disparities firsthand fueled my determination to advocate for equity and resources for institutions that serve underrepresented students.
Another key moment throughout my journey has been learning to adapt to failure and view it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. This mindset has been crucial in developing a growth-oriented approach to challenges. Embracing failure has allowed me to innovate and create pockets of creativity in every environment I touch, from small business IT departments to larger community initiatives, such as writing grants to support the Cross the Street Program, which gives back to youth in increasingly marginalized communities. These experiences have shaped my thinking and mindset. They have driven my commitment to fostering environments where ongoing success is possible, advocating for underrepresented individuals, and continually striving for personal and professional growth.
Where does your passion to serve come from??
My passion to serve comes from a deep understanding of the privileges and opportunities I have been afforded, thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of my family. Knowing the privilege I have experienced from their efforts has instilled a sense of responsibility to give back. They continue to work tirelessly to provide a stable and supportive environment for me, teaching me the value of dedication and resilience through everything. Their example has shown me the importance of helping others and contributing to the community I benefit from.
I also deeply appreciate the education I have pursued, especially when I think of my grandmother, GG, who was not given the same opportunities. Her experiences have inspired me to value and make the most of the chances I have been given every day, and her life inspires me never to give up no matter how hard the challenge. Despite the barriers she faced, my grandmother emphasized the importance of education and instilled in me an insatiable desire to never stop learning. This contrast between the opportunities available to me and those denied to her drives me to ensure that education and opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.
Understanding that the impact I want to leave on the world has to be much larger than myself, I am driven by the desire to create lasting, positive change in the lives of others. This sense of purpose has guided me to focus on efforts that benefit the greater good, from advocating for underrepresented voices to developing programs that support marginalized communities. Witnessing the positive change I have been able to make thus far has reinforced my belief in the importance of service and advocacy. Whether it was working with youth to voice their opinions or contributing to initiatives at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, seeing the tangible results of my efforts has been incredibly fulfilling. These experiences have shown me that one person can make a difference and have inspired me to continue striving for personal and professional growth.
On May 1st, 2024, at the Golden Aggie Leadership Awards, I was awarded Excellence in Community Service, an award that goes to a student not only for an influx of hours but also for meeting the needs of individuals in the greater Greensboro area. This has only driven me to continue impacting the lives of those who may need it.
