You know whether you are underpaid for the value you offer.

The exact same job only a few years apart and look at the difference:

$90k (2017) → $110k (2018) → $440k (2019) → $500k (2020) → $600k (2022)

Here's what I learned over the last 21 years working in tech:

It's not a matter of time, it's a matter of strategy

It took me 15 years to go from $18k to $110k.

I thought employers were actually fair, they weren't.

Employers have control, if you let them

Learn to switch jobs anytime you want, you will always be in control.

You will be paid significantly higher, be able to work remote, and have work-life balance.

You can push back on them

When they force you to come back to the office, you won't.

When they force you to prioritize them over your family, you won't.

Time is precious

I get to prepare my wife and kids' breakfast, lunch, drop them off, pick them up, and most importantly, spend quality time with them, instead of having to commute for three hours.

I wake up happy, excited, and fulfilled knowing I make a positive impact in people's lives, and get to choose who I want to work, and don't actually feel like I'm working because I love it.

Re-think

If you're a senior tech professional or executive in the USA or Canada, currently employed, earning $150k-300k, and feel miserable with your job, I want to encourage you to re-think.

Re-think how you have approached your career, re-think what you have compromised on, and re-think what will happen with your life and your family's lives if things don't change.

Stop

Stop focusing on what you don't have, and start appreciating what you actually do have.

Stop using excuses to justify your shortcomings, and start finding solutions to get ahead.

I didn't even graduate from university, I wasn't born here, and I also have an accent, so?

I'm talking about myself, and I didn't let that hold me back from living my best life yet.

Regardless of what you're going through, you are blessed; however, that's not enough, and the reason why you want to switch jobs, whether you have already started applying, or not.

Nonsense

I want to challenge you to stop with all the nonsense of tailoring your resume for every single job, writing cover letters, or sending thank-you emails that make you look desperate.

Whatever it is that you have tried is not working, you are landing very few interviews, if any at all, and having a hard time converting them into job offers with your desired conditions.
