From $100K - $500K: Lessons

$500K was a milestone of mine back in 2015.

Hitting it was more mindset than anything else.

But I also made it harder on myself than I needed to.

Ever done that to yourself?

Said work is HARD.

I believed that hard work was the thing that would get me there.

So the work was HARD.

There are so many mindset lessons I learned getting there.

I’ll talk about those in another article.

In this one, I want to talk about the practical lessons.

Three, in particular, have made a huge difference to my business ever since.

Actually made the business easier and FUN again.

If you want to go from $100K - > $500K in the next year or two, here are the steps.

1. Less about Referrals and More about Sales

Referrals are great.

They are the cream on the top of your business, but if you’re relying on them, your business is NOT in your control.

It’s in the control of the person referring to you.

Your business only gets new clients when someone decides to gift you one.

It was a massive shift in creating a client engagement process that works consistently.

A specific client pipeline.

Once you have this, you’ll never be short of new opportunities again.

2. Less about helping Everyone and More about Focus

YES, you can help lots of different types of people.

AND, yes it does make business interesting.

BUT, there are interesting people who (yes, whom) all have similar problems.

There are interesting businesses in similar industries.

Deciding to focus on specific problems you’re especially good at solving allows you to be the BEST at what you do.

Rather than one of many smart people in the market.

Focus on fewer products, fewer services, and more specific clients will enhance your business.

You’ll begin to attract MORE of the great ‘interesting' people, making your business easier and more profitable.

Every individual is different. You’ll find ‘interest’ in the individuals, rather than the problems you solve.

3. Less about Projects and More about Outcomes

Projects are a hamster wheel.

You pick up a project, you do the project, you close the project, you search for the next one.

And YES, you can search for the next one before you finish the current one.

You have the fancy hamster wheel…fancy!

Either way, it’s over and over again.

When you want to scale the number of projects you run, you’ll likely need to scale your team.

If you want to run more than a handful at a time.

Rather than focusing on projects…I recommend focusing on outcomes.

Projects are about getting things done.

Outcomes are about getting results.

Outcomes are more valuable…AND, there are thousands of ways to deliver outcomes.

You get to CHOOSE delivery mechanisms that suit your business and lifestyle.

AND, the BEST steps to suit the outcome.

You’ll find higher fees, retainer opportunities (when it makes sense), and faster ways to help the client, so MORE PROFIT.

Clients will thank you for it.


So is NOW the moment when you decide business no longer needs to be HARD?

It can flow and fit a lifestyle you love.

You can reach $500K without the HARD WORK and drama.
