Welcome to this special edition of the?Launch, Already!?Newsletter. Jamie Wilkey, PharmD ?? has asked me to share my podcasting journey and what I've learned as a PharmD who is really standing out with podcasting in the UK. ?Today, I get to introduce myself to a new audience which I am really excited about. My name is Anisha Patel ??? and I am a passionate pharmacist and podcaster who lives in the United Kingdom.

I’m excited to share not only my journey but also some valuable lessons on how you, too, can find your voice and share your passion with the world. As pharmacists, we are often introverted, quiet, and deeply dedicated professionals who don’t always have a platform to share our insights. Through my podcast, Pharmacist Diaries, I’ve learned the power of storytelling and connecting with a broader audience, and I am here to encourage you to do the same.

But first, a message from this newsletter's

My Journey Into Pharmacy

My journey in pharmacy has been anything but conventional. From the moment I earned my degree, I knew I wanted to explore the diverse facets of this field. Here’s a closer look at my career trajectory:

  • Community and Hospital Pharmacies: I started in community pharmacy as a student, where I developed a deep understanding of patient care and medication management. I transitioned into hospital as a resident pharmacist which is a 3 year program in the UK and gave me a fabulous foundation as a newly qualified pharmacist.
  • Global Perspective: During residency, I fell deeply and madly in love with my husband who was living all the way in Dubai! Once my residency was complete, I decided to go on an adventure and explore pharmacy in another country. My international experience, particularly in the United Arab Emirates, has enriched my understanding of global healthcare systems. Serving at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a unique highlight, showcasing the integration of pharmacy services in high-stakes environments.
  • Pediatric Specialist: My true calling emerged when I delved into pediatrics 5 years ago when we returned back home. Working with young patients and their families has been immensely rewarding. It’s a challenging field that requires both expertise and compassion, and I’ve embraced it wholeheartedly. Within pediatrics, my focus is within Palliative Care.
  • Pharmacy School Lecturer: At King’s College London, I have the privilege of shaping the minds of future pharmacists. Seeing my students inspired and motivated is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career. This role helped me identify a huge problem, and one which I was ready to tackle and solve. Students lacked awareness of the opportunities available to them upon graduation which also aligned with the fact that pharmacy itself doesn’t showcase the profession as well as it could!

The Birth of Pharmacist Diaries

In 2020, I took a bold step into the world of podcasting by launching the "Pharmacist Diaries" podcast. The idea stemmed from my desire to highlight the untold stories within our profession alongside educating and inspiring my own students in a digital format that they would enjoy.

There’s a world of diversity in pharmacy that often goes unnoticed, and I wanted to create a platform where these stories could be shared and celebrated.

Finding Your Voice: Why It Matters

Pharmacists are typically known for being reserved and dedicated professionals. However, I believe we all have unique stories and valuable insights to share. Finding your voice and sharing it with the world can lead to incredible opportunities and personal growth. Here’s why you should consider finding a platform to express yourself:

  • Break the Silence: Your voice matters. Whether it's through short-form videos, consistent LinkedIn posts, a regular blog or newsletter, or even starting your own podcast, find a way to share your insights and experiences.
  • Start Now: Don’t wait for the perfect time or format. Start with what you have and where you are. When I started my podcast, I had no idea where it would lead. Now, with 146 episodes, over 50,000+ downloads, and listeners in 125 countries, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of simply starting and growing from there.
  • Learn and Adapt: The journey of sharing your voice is also a learning process. Listen to your audience, understand their needs, and adapt accordingly. This iterative process helps you grow and improve over time.
  • Solve a Problem: Identify a problem or gap in your field and use your platform to address it. For me, it was giving a voice to the pharmacy profession. What issue or need can you address with your insights?

Practical Steps to Get Started

Getting started can feel overwhelming, but here are some practical steps to help you begin your journey:

  1. Identify Your Passion: Reflect on what topics you are most passionate about. This will keep you motivated and engaged in the long run.
  2. Choose Your Platform: Decide which platform best suits your strengths and interests. Whether it’s podcasting, blogging, or creating videos, each medium has its unique advantages.
  3. Create a Content Plan: Outline your content ideas and create a schedule. Consistency is key to building and retaining an audience.
  4. Engage with Your Audience: Use social media and other channels to interact with your audience. Their feedback is invaluable in shaping your content and making it more relevant.
  5. Embrace Imperfection: Don’t strive for perfection right away. It’s more important to start and gradually improve. Each piece of content is a learning experience.
