Fristajl: Not Just Engineers, But Skiers Carving New Paths

Fristajl: Not Just Engineers, But Skiers Carving New Paths

In the world of winter sports, where the crisp air meets the thrill of the descent, two passionate colleagues Dora Domajnko an Miran Domajnko from RLS have carved a niche that defies the conventional. Not content with merely following the well-trodden paths of engineering, they ventured into the untamed territories of freestyle skiing, transforming their childhood defiance into a mission of enlightenment. From the chaos of ski slopes filled with the exuberance of youth to the structured discipline of engineering, their journey is a testament to the power of passion and the allure of the freestyle ('fristajl') spirit.

Today we have a short interview with the Fristajl team.

Can you tell us about your journey into freestyle skiing? How did you get started?

Children on the ski slopes are a terrible sight. They misbehave on the ski lifts, they want to ski outside the marked area, ski jumps and parks attract them like honey. Blinded by their awesomeness, they scream in excitement as they perform their miserable tricks on every small bump.

We were the same, except that we failed to ever grow out of it. Instead, we tried to get better (or worse, says mom), and with time we became instructors of freestyle skiing. After gaining our teaching licenses, we decided it was our duty to also bring others to the dark side. How come not! Everyone thought skiing was all about perfect carving in perfect conditions, as if they never spent a single day on actual Slovenian ski slopes. They were missing out so much fun!

What inspired you to have Fristajl dnevi?

We first organized Fristajl dnevi event in 2023. The most difficult task was convincing people that, yes, the event was suitable for them, even if they were no freestyle skiers! You don't need special equipment or be crazy to feel the fristajl vibe. It is all about the attitude – getting to know new stuff in a safe manner, letting one’s curiosity go out of hands, and of course – having fun!

How do you like your employer RLS also supporting Fristajl dnevi?

Luckily, RLS shares our sportful philosophy. The company greatly supported our cause and helped us carry out an event on a high level. Participants, RLS employees and their family members among them, were trying out the moguls, jumps and sliding objects under the watchful eyes of experienced instructors. Even beginners, who just slid their first meters on the skis, quickly gained enough skills to join the ski-cross competition with famous Filip Flisar, test new Elan skis and win appealing awards.

This year’s event is just around the corner, and we are already looking forward to this new adventure! On Friday afternoon, some RLS’s engineers will stop their magnetic field simulations, turn down the oscilloscopes and hurry to Kope with shovels and shapers to prepare the snowpark for their students…
