The frightening connection between disability and homelessness.

Providing hope for everyone that they can resolve their particular housing situation.
People with disabilities can contribute to our society in many ways, however there is also a frightening connection between disability and homelessness.
Living with a disability means that a person is more likely to experience poverty which in turn makes them more vulnerable to being forced into homelessness. According to colleagues at Shelter UK, over half of people with a significant disability do not have a safe or secure home, compared with about a third of people without a disability.?
When someone living with a disability is forced into homelessness, getting support can be much harder, especially if they have a learning disability and struggle to cope with bureaucracy or navigating the benefits system. For people living with a physical disability, accessible housing is not easy to find and the stress of living in unsuitable temporary accommodation can further damage their physical and mental health.
Disability Pride Month was created in the United States and?it is a month long celebration of?many people with disabilities, stories of achievements and struggles faced that we all need to be celebrating and acknowledging.
#JerseyCI is generally regarded as a wealthy society, and we need to work together to eliminate the word ableism as part of our ongoing battle to raise awareness of all issues involved with #homelessness .
