Friends...Gotta Love Them

Today, I listened to Simon Sinek and Trevor Noah discuss something we don’t talk about enough — friendship. We get advice on parenting, leadership, and business, but, SInek points out, almost nothing on what makes a healthy friendship, which I agree with.

Why do we settle for less in friendships when we could have better, more fulfilling connections? We often treat friends like family, tolerating bad behavior, accepting freeloaders, and avoiding tough conversations. That friend who never pays unless asked? We let it slide, but why?

As a recovering people-pleaser, I’ve realised friendships shouldn’t be a one-way street. I used to think relationships with my brothers would fill that gap, but after a certain age, we had nothing in common. Feeling isolated, I turned to friends, often being the one to reach out. But friendship doesn't have to be a long phone call—it can be a quick WhatsApp message, an email, or even a card.

Friendship should never feel transactional, like we’re meeting just to spend money or solve each other's problems. We meet because we value each other’s company, not because we need something.

As I’ve grown older—last Tuesday was my birthday—I’ve learned that not everyone deserves a permanent place in my life. Even family. I’ve built healthier boundaries, and it feels good. I no longer believe that just because someone has been in my life for years, they deserve to stay if they no longer respect who I am now.

Nostalgia isn’t enough. Friendship should serve the person you’ve become, not who you were.

What are your thoughts about friendship at this time of your life? Do share, I care to know!

Go on...

Embrace you. Play More!

I'm Jo and call myself a Creative Doula - Artist, Educator and Coach. I use a creative and artistic approach to getting Step-mums locating their purpose and living their life vision.

Of course our vision can change and as it grows why not have a coach to help you get there through knowing your purpose.

We will examine your values and what makes you sweaty and hot for life.

As a step mum you are likely to be worried about where you fit into your new found family, but have never thought about your needs and how connecting with yourself first can make a big difference to how you show up for your inherited family and of course YOU!
