Friend, We Need to Talk

Friend, We Need to Talk

?

Hello Friend,

How would you feel if you were faced with the prospect of departing from this world tomorrow? I understand that this is a deeply sensitive question, but it's essential to contemplate. Would you experience a sense of fulfillment, anger, or a burden of regrets?

No matter your emotions in response to this hypothetical scenario, they can serve as a catalyst to recognize the urgency of how you approach your life's purpose. This reflection was prompted by my recent reading of Paul Kalanithi's book, 'When Breath Becomes Air.' He was in the final stages of his Stanford residency when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and, tragically, passed away while writing the book. His words made me grasp the profound nature of life and the importance of living in the present rather than waiting for the perfect moment.

If you recall, earlier this year, we made the decision to jot down our goals, and I propose that we revisit that list. Be honest in your self-assessment, grading yourself on a scale of 100, with 70 as the passing mark. If you've achieved a score above 70, congratulations. However, if your score falls below, it's a clear signal that we all have room for improvement before the year concludes.

I urge you to approach each goal with a sense of urgency, especially in your career, as it often plays a vital role in fulfilling your life's purpose. No matter what remains on your list, it's not too late to take action. Lay out actionable steps required to reach each goal and make them a reality.

You still have over 60 days left in 2023 to give your life and purpose your very best shot. Approach these remaining days with a strong sense of urgency.

HR Best Practice: Case Study

So, Citibank recently won an employment tribunal after sacking a worker for claiming expenses for sandwiches and coffee for his partner, and then lying about it.

The employee, after an investigation, was fired for gross misconduct. This led to a lawsuit for unfair dismissal.

Please read till the end to share your opinion.

Mr Fekete, who worked at Citi for seven years as an analyst specialising in financial crime, had travelled to Amsterdam for work between 3 and 5 July last year.

On returning to London, he filed an expense claim for food and drink which he believed was covered by the bank's €100 (£86.70) daily allowance.

However, the manager he submitted his claim to queried whether he had consumed all the food and refreshments he was seeking reimbursement for.

In an email exchange detailed in the employment tribunal ruling, Mr Fekete wrote: "I was on the business trip by myself and... I had 2 coffees as they were very small."

He further stated: "On that day I skipped breakfast and only had 1 coffee in the morning. For lunch I had 1 sandwich with a drink and 1 coffee in the restaurant, and took another coffee back to the office with me and had the second sandwich in the afternoon… which also served as my dinner."

Mr Fekete told Citi: "All my expenses are within the €100 daily allowance. Could you please outline what your concern is as I don't think I have to justify my eating habits to this extent."

The bank stated that its query was not about the amount but if the claim breached its expense management policy, which states that spousal travel and meals are not reimbursable.
