A Friend in Need | #MyFridayStory No. 369
Friendship is one of the most extraordinary gifts we can experience. I know this because I’ve been blessed with a friend who has stood by me through every triumph, trial, and turning point in my life. We met when we were just five years old, and now, at 62, our bond has grown into something even deeper than brotherhood.
When I think about my best friend, I’m struck by the many ways he has shaped my life. His love and care for me have been unwavering and deeply impactful. For example, he taught me how to hunt and shoot a rifle properly, instilling in me the principles of ethical hunting. Twice, he saved my life from drowning: once in a dam and once in the ocean. And when we graduated high school, he patiently taught me how to drive.
This man, born just a month after me, has always seemed older, wiser, and more capable. From his natural athleticism to his charming dimples and his ability to hold his own among both princes and paupers, he is truly remarkable. When we were kids, my sisters used to chase him around the school sports field, hoping to kiss him. Even today, women are still drawn to him like moths to a flame.
Over the years, he has shown me what true friendship looks like. When I was longing to reunite with my girlfriend, who had moved overseas, he paid for my plane ticket so I could visit her. Later, when I introduced him to her best friend, they hit it off so well that they were married within a year. Though their marriage didn’t last, he has always honoured his responsibilities toward her and their daughter. To this day, they remain close friends.
As the owner of a successful pie business for over 20 years, he has been in a fortunate position to help others financially. From employing those in need to supporting his extended family through the business, he has made a tangible difference in countless lives. His mother, older brother, and nephew are all involved in the business, and he has extended opportunities and kindness to many more.
I joined the family business in August 2023, and it has been a rewarding experience.
Last year, life dealt me a tough blow. A truck hit me while I was riding my scooter to work, snapping my femur. I spent 26 days in the hospital and couldn’t walk for three months. With no medical aid or insurance to cover such an event, I faced financial uncertainty. But my friend stepped in and paid me my full salary for the three months I was bedridden.
Who does that? Who gives so selflessly, so consistently, without expecting anything in return?
My friend does.
And now, he and his family have shown me yet another act of extraordinary grace. My accident left me without transportation, and financial setbacks meant I couldn’t afford a car. I was facing years without wheels.
But God had other plans.
My friend’s ex-wife is emigrating, leaving behind her car. His mother, needing an automatic vehicle to replace her manual one, will take that car. And her current car? That’s the one I’ll be using. Everything aligned perfectly, as if orchestrated by divine hands.
This is more than most would do for a family member, let alone a friend. But that’s the kind of man he is. And his generosity is mirrored by his family—his brother, his nephew, and his mother—all of whom have shown me love and kindness that leave me humbled and grateful.
Reflecting on this, I can’t help but see God’s hand at work. My friend’s lifelong support, the timely provision of this car, and the countless other blessings I’ve received are all reminders of God’s grace and mercy. It’s not magic or a transactional relationship. It’s a loving Father orchestrating every detail of our lives for good, inviting us to experience His kindness, peace, and love here on Earth today.
If there’s one takeaway from this story, it’s that we should never underestimate the power of relationships—both with God and with each other. My friend has been a vessel of God’s love in my life, guiding me, supporting me, and reminding me what it means to live with grace, generosity, and faith.
For those who might wonder if such friendships still exist, let me assure you: they do. I am blessed with more than one! And they are a glimpse of the kind of relationship God desires to have with us. Seek Him earnestly, and you will find a love greater than anything you’ve ever known—a love that sustains, redeems, and blesses beyond measure.
As I drive that car in the coming days, I’ll be reminded of the friend who made it possible, the family who supported him, and the God who brought it all together. For all of it, I am forever grateful.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember to be generous! ??
