The Friday Thing #826
Hello Friday. I have been waiting for you.?
The Friday Thing #826 is a remix. Sort of.?
I spent the evening hosting a dinner and discussion yesterday on the impact AI will have on the movie industry in Hollywood and we spent quite a bit of time talking about how everyone is influenced by stuff they see, hear, read, and watch. We're also being influenced subconsciously through all those inputs too. My shorthand for this is "everything is a remix" and our views on that notion are being brough into sharp relief in a world of AI and large language models. Suffice it to say, it was a great discussion. I shared a lot and learned a lot more.?
Which is why this week is a bit of a remix as I would like to take you back to edition #776 from one year ago today and share No.5 from my list of '25 lessons from 25 years at Microsoft' which says Read widely, share generously. Sharing is my route to learning as you almost always get more back when you share.?
The second reason that this week is a remix is because earlier in the week I was presenting an internal session on personal branding - broadly based on edition #691. During that presentation I asked why I began the Friday Thing all those years ago and I explained that it was really just a way to share something fun I found on the Internet each week with a small group of friends. So, the final element of the remix this week is to go back to those roots and share something fun.?
This week it is the social media phenomenon that is Scotland's "gritters". These are the snowplows and salt trucks of Scotland that each year are named by the public and then are available to be tracked via the Internet. Marketing genius as you can see below. The public has until January 16th?to submit name suggestions for this year to join classic names of yore such as Skid Vicious, Sweet Child O’ Brine Calvin Harr-Ice, Spready Mercury and I Came, I Thaw, I Conquered.?

Seattle...take note.?
That's all for this week. I am now off to celebrate my 26th year anniversary at Microsoft and will do so accompanied by Champagne Supernova by Oasis.
Happy Friday!

1 å¹´Love this, Steve! And happy 26th. The creative WSDOT social media team started a naming contest a few years ago for snow towplows. Betty Whteout won last year and joins Sir Plows-A-Lot, the Big LePlowski, etc. Fun! https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2022/dec/19/getting-there-betty-whiteout-and-other-eastern-was/
