The Friday Thing #824
Any 180's for you during the week after last week's edition??
The Friday Thing #824 is a podcast recommendation. Next week we'll get back to AI, don't worry!
During the pandemic, I listened to podcasts quite a lot - The Daily from The New York Times in particular but a few others too, often cycling related. Over the last year, my podcast listening dropped precipitously as my commute time was being spent on calls or mentally preparing?for the day ahead. Yet over the last few months, I have found myself with time and appetite to turn my commute attention back to podcasts.?
My new favourite is Boss Class from The Economist, recommended to me by my friend, Jen. It's hosted by Andrew Palmer who authors the weekly Bartelby column in The Economist and his sardonic delivery is the first thing I appreciated about the series. His great wit is matched with great substance.?
In episode one titled "Weed it and reap", he talks to Emma Walmsley the CEO of GSK and I found myself smiling as she talked about the one page "why, what and how" of GSK that she has stuck to her computer with sellotape. It sounded familiar?? Episode two covers hybrid work, quoting Microsoft research on the topic and untangles one of the hottest issues in business over the course of 30 minutes. Episode 5 is my favourite one thus far and is titled "The clown car". It's all about meetings and is both funny and very informative. The introduction and reference to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)?World War II document titled "Simple Sabotage Field Manual" is brilliant. The now declassified document is an instructive read, especially page 28 that Palmer points us to.?

Laughter aside, the podcast series is very much worth a listen if you're in the business of business -- and especially leadership. Full disclosure, the first two episodes are free and after that there is a small fee - which I hope you agree is worth it to support quality journalism.?
That's all for this week. I'm off to drive my non clown car and listen to some music which this week is Everybody's Changing by Keane.
Happy Friday!

1 年Another great #TheFridayThing, thank you! I saw that sabotage manual a few years back on social media and couldn't find it for the life of me. I was starting to think that I'd imagined it, so thank you for saving my sanity:)
