The Friday Thing #769
Tada….Friday.?
The Friday Thing #769 is a light edition after a few weeks of long reading.
I was quite convinced I had shared this short video in an earlier edition, but it seems that’s not the case – I apologize if it’s a dupe. I was reminded to share it during a brief meeting last week with Ronan Farrow as he was wrapping up an interview. The video crew sought to capture what is known as “room tone” – a phenomenon I only became aware of during Chapter 2 of my Microsoft career as I ventured into media and TV work. The first time a video crew asked me to deliver some room tone, I was perplexed. For the uninitiated, “room tone” is the ambient sound of a space typically captured at the end of a shoot. Editors use it as sound that can fill gaps when they edit clips or need to create an artificial pause in a shot. Or as Editor Daniel Reis says, “think of it almost like the mortar between bricks”. It was Reis who created “The Gift of Room Tone ” – a delightful short, featuring Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Walken, Carey Mulligan and more.?
I can now hardly wait for my next room tone moment. I’ve been doing it wrong all these years ??
That’s all for this week.
Cheers & Happy Friday,
- Steve
