The Friday Thing #681
Federer was a hit last week…what a class act he is.
The Friday Thing #681 features two longish podcast episodes that I hope you will love. The first one I came across somewhat by accident (I actually can’t even remember how) and the second was sent to me a while back by Janelle. Both have been a real hit with my family this week. On Monday we set out on a road trip of about 3 hours and I had decided that listening to various videos with annoying music/voices from the back of the car was not going to be acceptable on this road trip. No, we were going to have something we could all enjoy together (I hoped) and ideally something educational.
First up, was an episode from the New York Times that is a reading of a story from 2014 titled A Speck in the Sea. I didn’t read it back then and stumbled upon it via The Daily’s Sunday Read. As we pulled out of our driveway, I had 3 skeptical listeners who wanted to know why they were being subjected to what sounded like a grim story of a lobster fisherman from Montauk who fell overboard from his vessel one evening, 40 miles off shore. Without a life vest. What ensues is an epic tale that is stunningly well written and excellently retold. Ten minutes in, my three skeptics were on the edge of their seats and 35 minutes later they were astonished and exhausted. Great storytelling can do that to you. I hope you enjoy The Sunday Read: 'A Speck in the Sea'
Next up is another epic tale – this one the search not for a person, but for a song. Reply All’s episode #158 chronicles the quest of Tyler Gillett to solve a musical mystery and find a song he used to listen to on the radio as a teen in Arizona – which has disappeared in to thin air. In an era where everything is on the Internet, this song is not. “How on God’s green Earth can you have a hit radio song that actually just gets vaporized from history?” asks Reply All’s host, PJ Vogt. What ensues is brilliant storytelling (again) and for me, an enraptured audience (again). So much so, when we finished, my crew simply asked for “more stories like that one please”. If you know of more, send them my way ?? Meantime, enjoy The Case of the Missing Hit.
Okay, that’s plenty for this week….oh well, apart from this short film titled One Day, One Microsoft. I mean, that’s some beautiful storytelling too….
That’s all for this week. As always, take care and have a great weekend.
