Happy Friday
I trust you are relaxing and have a restful day ahead.? Or do you have a sense of it being ‘the new term’. A time that sees the last rays of summer and welcomes the crisp days of Autumn.? A time of transition into winter.
At such times it can feel overwhelming to think of making big changes and indeed it is not really a time to do it.? It is a time to hunker down and, as our predecessors did, prepare to go within for the darker months ahead.
What is always possible is to remember that big changes often start with small, seemingly insignificant actions. Whether it's a slight adjustment in our daily routine or a tiny shift in our mindset, small changes can accumulate and lead to significant outcomes over time. This describes the compound effect—a concept that might sound simple but has the power to transform your life in ways you may not expect.
Recently, a client shared her frustration about procrastinating over an important project she had to get done.?She wanted to do it and yet kept failing to deliver.? It’s a scenario many of us can relate to. We think we’re doing everything right, but somehow, the results aren’t what we expect. This is where the compound effect comes into play.
The compound effect, brilliantly explained by Darren Hardy in his book of the same name, shows us that our daily habits—no matter how small—add up over time. The key to success, or failure, lies in the consistency of these habits. A single extra biscuit, a skipped workout, or hitting the snooze button just once might seem harmless in the moment, but when these actions become regular, they steer us off course.
The idea of being "one degree off course" might seem trivial, but it’s a powerful metaphor. Imagine you’re on a journey, and you veer off by just one degree. At first, it doesn’t seem like much, but over time, you find yourself miles away from your intended destination. The same goes for our goals in life. A small misstep might not have immediate consequences, but over time, it can lead to significant detours from where we want to be.
What makes the compound effect so impactful is that it works both ways. Just as small, negative habits can lead you to where you don’t want to go, small, positive changes can lead to tremendous success. This isn’t about overnight transformations; it’s about steady, consistent progress.
It’s about committing to small, positive actions every day and allowing them to build momentum. In a world where we’re often looking for quick fixes, the compound effect reminds us that real, lasting change takes time and consistent effort.? After all, when you were a toddler, you didn’t expect to learn to walk in a day and didn’t give up when you repeatedly fell down did you?
Also, this isn’t about willpower – something I’ve written about before and tend to hook back to each January. It’s about being strategic. You need to create an environment that will allow success. Where distractions are minimised and you are surrounded by people who uplift and encourage you.
Momentum, or what Hardy calls “The Big Mo,” is crucial. Once you start making positive changes consistently, they become easier to maintain, and soon enough, they’ll carry you toward your goals almost effortlessly.
Of course, the journey won’t always be smooth. You’ll encounter challenges and setbacks. But these obstacles are opportunities for growth. When you push through them, you not only achieve your goals but also become stronger in the process.
In the end, the compound effect is a simple but powerful principle that can change your life. The results may not be immediate, but they will be worth the wait.
And what better way to know what small yet significant changes to make than to sign up for the Summit that I’m speaking at later this month!
