North America Prepares for Major Strike Action:?Labor disputes at two major aviation companies in North America—Boeing and Air Canada—are triggering concerns over industrial action. Boeing workers went on strike at 12:01 this morning, crippling the company’s factories in the Northwest. Meanwhile, Air Canada pilots may issue a 72-hour strike notice on Sunday, disrupting air travel nationwide.??

  • Around 33,000 unionized machinists at Boeing voted to strike yesterday, prompting a walkout that began at 12:01 am PDT this morning. The strike affects most of the company’s airplane production and is expected to cost Boeing an estimated $1 billion per week, exacerbating cash flow issues and complicating the aerospace company’s efforts to restore its reputation after several incidents involving its planes. Extended strike action will also likely disrupt the wider aviation supply chain and delay jet deliveries to airlines, several of which are facing plane shortages.
  • Over the border, more than 5,000 unionized pilots with Air Canada may issue a 72-hour strike notice on Sunday, setting the stage for a nationwide walkout as soon as Wednesday. The airline, which controls over 40% of the domestic market, is expected to begin suspending operations by Sunday if an agreement isn’t reached, affecting tens of thousands of passengers and cargo. Air Canada is requesting the federal government step in to halt the potential strike.?
