The Friday Future Of Work (Volume 12) CHANGE

A special edition of the FOW newsletter for Show Your Stripes Day

Happy Fridays.

Welcome to a very special edition of the future of work Friday. Inspired by #ShowYourStripes day. So, we're taking a detour from our usual AI, tech and the future of work discussions to address an issue that underpins all our future work scenarios: climate change.

The Shirt That Speaks Volumes

You might have noticed a recurring theme in my public speaking engagements - a particular shirt that's been raising eyebrows and sparking conversations.

No, I haven't worn the same shirt to every event (though that would be an interesting experiment in sustainable fashion). I actually own several identical shirts, each bearing the striking #ShowYourStripes design.

These shirts, created by the innovative Cambridge-based company DressCode Shirts, founded by Andy Boothman, are more than just a fashion statement. They're a visual representation of our planet's warming trends, a silent yet powerful reminder of the climate crisis we face.

Why Stripes? Why Now?

The #ShowYourStripes pattern isn't just an abstract design. Each stripe represents a year, with blue stripes indicating cooler years and red stripes showing warmer ones. The overall effect is a stark visual of our planet's warming trend over time.

June 21st marks the annual #ShowYourStripes Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about human-caused climate change. By wearing these stripes, we're not just making a fashion statement - we're making a commitment to our planet's future.

AI: Friend or Foe?

While we often discuss AI as a potential threat to jobs or privacy, today I want to challenge you to think differently.

“What if AI could be our ally in the fight against climate change?”

Imagine AI systems optimizing energy grids for maximum efficiency, predicting extreme weather events with unprecedented accuracy, or designing innovative carbon capture technologies. The possibilities are as exciting as they are numerous.

Now don’t get me wrong - I am not saying everyone is using AI to do this, nor am I saying that AI doesn’t have an ecological impact, but just like with every tool - we can use AI for social good as well as private gain.

The Real Threat

Let's be clear: global warming, not AI, poses the greatest danger to humanity. While we debate the ethics of artificial intelligence, our planet continues to warm at an alarming rate. If we don't address this issue, discussions about the future of work may become moot.

A Call to Action

So, what can we do? Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Educate yourself: Visit https://showyourstripes.info to learn more about climate trends in your area.
  2. Spread awareness: Share the #ShowYourStripes message on social media.
  3. Make sustainable choices: In your work and personal life, opt for eco-friendly alternatives where possible.
  4. Support innovation: Encourage and invest in technologies that combat climate change.

Remember, every small action counts. Whether it's wearing a striped shirt to spark conversations or implementing energy-saving measures in your workplace, you have the power to make a difference.

Final Thoughts

As we ponder the future of work, let's not forget the future of our planet. After all, without a healthy Earth, there won't be any work to worry about. So let's harness the power of AI, human ingenuity, and collective action to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Until next week, when we will be returning to talking about the future of work, after my training companies at the RichmondHR event - following the legend Bruce Daisley on stage (a bucket list moment for me) keep thinking differently and don't forget to (if you can to) show your stripes!
