Only 50% of CSOs spending more than 70% of their time on ‘high impact work’

A new report from BSR highlights the changing role of the CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) and highlights the pressures of balancing reporting with innovating.? The report found that:

‘Only 50 percent of respondents spend 70 percent or more of their time on “high-impact” work, including 64 percent in the US and 40 percent in Europe. This tepid response may indicate that CSOs feel caught in compliance or less strategic work, though this effect is less pronounced in the US, where CSOs are leveraging new regulations to push companies up the maturity curve. Notably, 26 percent of respondents say they spend less than half their time on “high impact” work.’

The report proposes three different potential typologies for the future CSO;?

  1. ‘The Steady Manager - characterised by risk management and compliance;?
  2. ‘The integrated strategist’ - characterised by a strategic and forward thinking and integrated role within the existing structures;?
  3. ‘The transformative change agent’ - characterised by exploring fundamental shifts in business model and strategy.?

The challenge for CSOs that we are speaking to is that they are being asked to be all of these things, all at once! Another key challenge is that they are drowned in complex data, scattered in various systems, spreadsheets and powerpoints where the CSO has a challenging time to create a holistic picture and aggregate insights to guide the organisation in the right direction. We heard one CSO say: I want to digitise everything sustainability. Which we couldn’t agree with more!

UK fashion not meeting circular economy ambition with action.?

The Circular Fashion Innovation Network released its interim report on the state of circular fashion in the UK last week.? They found that ‘81% of organisations include [circular business models] CBMs in their five-year strategy.’? However, they also identified that ‘63% of existing customers facing CBMs are in a low-maturity pilot phase.’? This rings true with our experiences of circular business models in a number of sectors, with many remaining in pilot phase and not being backed sufficiently with marketing and investment to see the true potential impact, both on emissions and on competitiveness.? It is positive to see that the majority of fashion businesses have circularity on the agenda but as the report acknowledges, ‘The primary barrier to scaling these initiatives is financial viability, alongside challenges in customer communication and demand.’?
