The Friday Final Thought: 01/27/2023

I had a pep talk with my 12 yr. old daughter this week while we were en route to her basketball game. She was feeling down and out about having less playing time than other players on her team. She had put the effort in during practice, learned the plays, followed directions, was doing exactly what she was asked to do - but other girls were still getting more time on the court.

I recommended she focus on the things within her control. Make the most out of the minutes she was in the game with maximum effort - and more importantly - make sure the coach knew how much she WANTED to be on the court.

I was absolutely glowing when she asked the coach if she could be subbed in as the 3 during the second half of the game (she typically only plays the 2... that makes sense in basketball speak). The coach was also impressed and said he would let her play the 2 as long as she was aggressive and showed she knew the plays for that role. She did, and she did. She played the entire second half as the 3 - and had her best game of the season.

Moral of the story - dare to ask for what you want! Make it clear to your co-worker, your friend, your boss, your coach, your customer, your potential client - what it is that you are looking for. You might just get it! :)
