Unique algae collection marks 20 years of growth at SAMS

The Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP), housed at Scottish Association For Marine Science in Oban, celebrates 20 years as one of the world’s most biodiverse collections. Over the past two decades, it has nearly doubled in size, now holding more than 3,000 strains and supporting researchers globally. CCAP continues to advance algal research, contributing to sustainable innovations in medicine, food, and industry. Read more about the achievements of the CCAP on the SAMS Newsroom and on the CCAP website.

Her work is on cetaceans in the UK and are currently working on their honours project focusing on common dolphins in conjunction with the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust . Outside of their studies, she is an artist and photographer and you can find examples of their work on BlueSky and Instagram (would highly recommend follow them whilst your there!). Key themes included the need for dedicated time, trust-building, and innovative, tailored engagement methods to combat stakeholder fatigue.

The event highlighted the potential for community-led initiatives, though administrative burdens and funding requirements remain barriers. Supported by the MASTS Engagement in European Research (MEER) Award, this collaborative effort is building a network for sharing insights and fostering meaningful engagement in the Baltic region.
