Friday Digital Digest 24/01/2024 - TikTok is back in the US, IG extends reel time and Trump “ends federal censorship”
This week’s edition of our Digital Digest has quite the news week, from TikTok becoming available in the US again, Instagram extending reel time and Trump ‘ending federal censorship’.

After ‘going dark’ for around 20 hours, the app is back up again for US users although it still cannot be downloaded by new users. This comes after Trump is set to give an executive order to delay the effect of the prohibition by around 3 months.
Instagram have now extended reel length to 3 mins. As reels are pushed more to non followers it makes sense that the length has been extended, especially as Instagram is looking to compete with TikTok.
Under the order, all government agencies, employees, and agents are barred from using any federal resource to "abridge the free speech of any American citizen."
Instagram's Adam Mosseri revealed that watch time, likes, and sends were the key algorithm factors for boosting reach, with comments playing a secondary role in driving engagement.
The Spanish Prime Minister believes that tech billionaires are working to overthrow democracy and is pushing for EU leaders to take action.
