Fresh Insight on Food Trends

As a Trend watcher – focussing on Fruit and Veggies –I like to stroll around Rotterdam – the place I live in and look at how Food trends are evolving.

In my keynotes I always talk about the bigger Trends and chapters as: Indulgence, Health, Convenience and Value for money and talk about developments and influences from generation as Y and Z.

Most recently the idea came to write short to the point articles to share my insights, thoughts and ideas from visiting new stores, restaurants and food outlets starting in Rotterdam.

In this first post I will focus on Indulgence, that is all about treating yourself to something special, that is not ordinary and if possible even to something out of the ordinary.

In one of my latest visits to a café that is also a great workplace in the city centre you order a coffee or in my case a cappuccino and the service staff asks you what milk you would like with your coffee and he went through all the choices to choose from these days: regular, skinned, oatmeal, soya, almond… I was quite impressed with all these to me unknown combinations for my (used to be so ordinary) cappuccino that I tried the oatmeal combi as a more healthy choice and it actually didn’t disappoint and found it quite nice…

However when I ordered a summer salad (that I saw included tomatoes) I was a bit disappointed that the same service staff didn’t ask me what tomato type I would like in my salad. I could name a few that would be a great match like “TastyTom” , “Adora”,  “Kumato” and for example “Honing tomato” and all would add a different eating experience/taste to the meal.

So what does that say, it means we are still not there guys and it also means taste profiling, food pairing and brands will become more and more important in the future to be able to play a role in the trends around Indulgence and create new consumer experiences...
