Fresh hope for marine finfish?

As new technologies open up fresh possibilities of farming offshore, so grows the potential of the marine finfish industry. It’s a sector that hasn’t really lived up to its promise – many of the species are still produced in small volumes and sold at premium prices. However, two of this week’s features suggest that there is cause for optimism.

Indeed,?according to Josh Goldman, Australis is on track to substantially ramp up barramundi production in Vietnam. Meanwhile,?Emily de Sousa explores how the US could learn a lesson from Central America’s offshore aquaculture pioneers. Whether such companies can help to convince investors, regulators and consumers that the future of seafood lies in farmed marine finfish remains to be seen, but it’s heartening to note that they are persisting in the face of testing environmental and political conditions.
