Fresh Eyes See New Opportunity

There’s no way to win. At least, that’s what I thought about 5 minutes ago as Rick was setting up for his shot. He’s tall, has hair too long, and is a bad boy pool shark if there ever was one. For the last 5 hours or so he’d been handily trouncing all comers from both far and wide. With his penultimate shot, my friend Tom will just be the next in a long line of good players to fall. Hands loose, confident he sets, and misses! They say he’s the best player in the torment! At least that what they said. But even in an uncharacteristic momentary loss of concentration the balls roll in his favor. The match and likely the tournament too still belong to Rick.

Rick’s rival, Tom, seeing what’s happened knowing how unlikely victory is even with the renewed hope of the miss, did something totally unexpected. He set his cue down. Looking at the table he walked away. We all watched, in varying degrees of stunned shock as he headed to the bathroom. I remember thinking “come over here and take you’re lumps…. There be all the time in world for the Men’s room soon enough.” Later as we toasted Tom’s victory he explained, “I thought it might be a good time to start again. Cool water, fresh hands a clean face. Surprisingly simple things. It was almost as if a vail had been lifted. I saw a way to win.”

As we watch countries, including our own, in crisis mode, it may seem like there is no way out of this. The virus has added problems that by all accounts, we were not prepared for. There have been many hospitals and other medical personnel who need masks, help, and ventilators. America and world is stepping up to fill that need. Automotive companies have begun production of ventilators and masks. Fiat will be sending out one million masks per month, and GM, Ford, and Tesla are working with ventilator manufacturers to create new ones using car materials like fans and batteries1. In addition, companies like MyPillow has begun to use their factories to make face masks. They will be churning out thousands of desperately needed supplies within the next coming days2. These are couple of examples of industry, entrepreneurs and marketers coming back to the table. Looking for and finding new ways to win and then succeeding to the benefit of everyone.

Yes these are big companies, don’t be intimidated, as marketers we can find ways to continue working and to filling needs and wants at every level. Yes, you can! Take a minute, rinse your face and hands. Resolve to be a clear-headed marketer.

It is my hope and fervent prayer that this current crisis passes you and yours by without incident.
