A recent panel at Connect X in Denver discussed "Are CBRS private networks an alternative to DAS?". This article in Fierce Wireless provides some highlights of the discussion between the speakers from American Tower, CommScope, Tessco, and Tillman Digital Cities.
Quoting one of the panelists Shefghan Mehboob; “If an organization put in a CBRS network and they were able to connect AT&T,?Verizon, and T-Mobile users without those users needing a new SIM … then that private network could be used just like a DAS,” he said, adding “it’s not about to replace DAS.”
No, it's not, however, I would contend that replacing and alternative are words with very specific meanings that artificially narrow the opportunity. Because any private 5G network can serve as a neutral host carrier if it meets the operator's specifications. That's helpful in an office building where a DAS would be uneconomical, which is nearly all of them, especially now.
Would a private 5G network replace a DAS in a stadium? No. Primarily because a DAS can utilize more (licensed) frequency, it's the right technical solution.

So Neutral host on private 5G will happen because it can deliver a better experience for users in places where a DAS has never made sense. How much larger is the TAM for private 5G neutral host vs DAS? I'm no expert in real estate but there are a great deal more multi-tenant buildings than stadiums, shopping malls, and airports. Maybe one of our readers might know?
In the G2 on 5G, this week Anshel & Will get into some of the news from a busy week including the first news of network slicing on a public network. Their take on the T-Mobile x SpaceX announcement to deliver text and voice coverage in existing dead zones via satellites that don't exist yet on rockets that don't fly yet...should be interesting.
