A Frenchman on a mission
A recent conversation with?Vincent Doumeizel, author of?The Seaweed Revolution, really helped to put the global food industry in perspective. As he pointed out, 71 percent of the planet is covered by water, yet it only produces 3 percent of our nutrition – a statistic that anyone involved in aquaculture should take to heart. While Doumeizel is convinced that cultivating seaweeds can help to address this imbalance, he is also aware of the numerous challenges facing the sector, not least the vast knowledge gaps that need to be filled. Perhaps the most astonishing point he made is that “There are over 12,000 different species of seaweed and a green seaweed and a red seaweed are genetically more different than a fungi is to an elephant”. It’s a claim that makes the potential of seaweed all the more tantalising and should – like the book itself – inspire a new generation of seaweed research.

1 年It's also great to see that Doumeizel's work extends beyond just farming seaweed. His efforts to educate and collaborate with local communities to build a sustainable seaweed industry are commendable. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of seaweed farming reach far beyond the economic sphere.
