? Reefer Truck Shortages Hit Key Agricultural Regions. Reefer truck shortages are impacting Idaho and Washington's key produce regions, including areas like Twin Falls and the Columbia River Basin, per recent USDA reports. These shortages, the first of 2024 for these states, contrast with an otherwise oversupplied market. Industry overcapacity remains a concern, with thousands of carrier closures monthly, according to DAT Freight & Analytics. While sporadic shortages, also noted in Florida and Chicago this year, can boost rates, carriers are struggling with low profits and losses. Despite these challenges, some signs of market tightening offer hope for a potential recovery.
?? November 2024 Logistics Industry Report. The Logistics Manager’s Index (LMI) for November 2024 registered at 58.4, marking a slight dip from October's 58.9 but reflecting consistent growth over 12 months. Key trends include increased inventory costs and warehousing prices, despite seasonal slowdowns in inventory levels and utilization. Consumer spending rose, fueled by higher disposable incomes, with robust retail activity during "Cyber Week." Tariff uncertainties loom as the incoming U.S. administration considers measures potentially disrupting supply chains, particularly with Mexico and Canada.

FreightVana Acquires Loadsmith's Brokerage Operations
FreightVana, one of the "fastest-growing logistics companies," announced its acquisition of Loadsmith’s brokerage operations in a deal expected to close by the end of December. This move further cements FreightVana’s leadership in the growing power-only sector.
Power-Only Logistics: Why It Matters
Loadsmith, founded in 2019, aligns perfectly with FreightVana’s vision. Speaking to FreightWaves, Loadsmith CEO Brett Suma stated:
The Autonomous Edge Loadsmith’s 2023 move to order 800 autonomous trucks from Kodiak Robotics showed its forward-thinking approach to automation. Now, as part of FreightVana, this tech-driven mindset could bring new opportunities to the power-only segment. Could autonomous trucks become part of FreightVana’s future?
What This Means for FreightVana
FreightVana co-founder and co-CEO Shannon Breen emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, saying:

“This acquisition is a natural step forward in our mission to lead the Power-Only category with innovative solutions and exceptional service. Together with Loadsmith’s complementary capabilities, we’re uniquely positioned to accelerate growth, drive efficiencies for our partners, and set the standard for what Power-Only logistics can achieve.”
The company plans to leverage Loadsmith’s expertise to scale operations and refine its trailer pool management.
Breen acknowledged the challenges of running asset-light models, especially in a soft freight market, but remains optimistic about the future. “With market equilibrium returning, power-only capabilities will always have demand,” he added.
The integration of Loadsmith's brokerage operations into FreightVana's infrastructure is expected to be completed within the next few months. During this period, both companies are committed to ensuring uninterrupted service and ongoing collaboration with their partners.
Breen and Suma joined Andrew Silver on his The Freight Pod podcast to discuss the deal's details and what it means for the power-only logistics market.
A Hot Year for M&A in Logistics
FreightVana’s move comes amid an increase in logistics M&A activity:
The power-only segment, in particular, has become an interest for innovation and investment. “As more traditional brokers enter this space, those with strong processes will gain additional market share,” Suma predicted.
