The Freight Sector's moment is NOW
The delay in post-Brexit Border implementation is THE moment in time that Freight and Logistic Associations must seize.
Forwarders have been successful over the decades with a core DNA of Isolated Independence.
Each has determined its own future with carriers, each paying for generally available data feeds and using the Trade Associations predominately for their Terms and Conditions, advice as required and enjoyable Industry Events.
Yet in the last 5 years, the Steamship Line Carriers have come together, under their Blockchain initiatives. They have sought in December 2019 a FMC understanding, to speak with other Lines within their arrangement, to avoid concerns over being in any form of collusion.
Forwarders CEOs do not request the same discussion platform; to meet under the auspices of our Associations to determine strategy; to collectively deal with the new and changing supporting service offerings; we think 'why we would we help a competitor?' or will we be required to pay higher membership fees? Yet greater revenue would give our Associations the clout to turn their model into more robust organisations. I cite FIATA as one undergoing commendable restructure and refocus.
The Associations make their independent representations to Government through their own channels. We have seen this week the RHA apparently getting under the skin of Minister Gove, in their challenging of data and proposed process.
Isolated as Forwarders , on our individual joint committees or through our own Associations results in us being side lined, picked off or suppressed.
Who knows all the Government Departments involved in Border Control? Who are all the main contacts, the decision makers who could sit opposite an Association's group of representatives to hear solutions and discuss the concerns?
I call for Horizontal Collaboration between UK Freight and Logistics Associations, where collectively we can become the focal point of debate, bringing our expertise to the table.
Perhaps after this weeks climb down the UK Government may be prepare to listen to a cross Logistic representation.
After all, they don't know what they don't know. We do and we could help the country.

3 年Couldn't agree more Steve. Some of the bodies are afraid to speak the truth as they will no longer be invited to the government roundtable events that still happen albeit virtually. We need one voice.
