Freezing Temperatures Coming ! 3 Tips To Prepare For Water Damage In Your Building .

Within the next two days, much of the USA will be hit with extreme cold temperatures. Here are three tips to prepare you or your clients when they have a water damage.

1. Water damaged electronics and computers- When the extreme cold causes pipes and sprinkler heads to bust, the first thing we think of is extracting the water. Yes, that's a great idea, but we need to also look around for items that maybe effected by high humidity. Electronics and computers are easily affected by high humidity even though not an ounce of water touched them. These items can be saved by easily doing these steps:

A. Turn off all electronics (make sure all data has been saved) 

B. Remove all electronics out of the water damage effected areas into dry non-effected areas

C. Contact a drying specialist to analyze and save computers and electronics 

2. Wet Files and Documents, etc.- In many cases wet documents and related items are assumed trash by your clients, when in fact they can actually be salvaged. Advise your clients to remove the items in a dry area, but DO NOT TRY TO SEPARATE SHEETS, ETC. Professionals trained in drying and document water damage situations will handle the items and, in most cases, make these items reusable. 

3. Document Before Throwing Out- In many situations’ clients will throw away items that were water damaged without documentation (photo, written description on like kind and quality). They will assume that the insurance adjuster will take their word for it. So here is my rule for water damage contents. 

A. Do your best to have items that are wet in a dry unaffected area. 

B. Take photos of all damaged items the day they were damaged.

C. Email photos to someone to prove that the photo was taken the day of the damage. 

D. Don't assume the item has no value. Your client maybe surprised the dollar value.
