5 Tips to Make Marketing Your Freelance Business Easier
Doing things that we’re already good at make us feel good. But doing things that are uncomfortable—like marketing a freelance business—is frustrating and stressful.
Do What’s Best, Not What Your Brain Wants to Do
It’s hard to overcome our wiring—the brain’s natural tendency to do what’s easy. Here are 5 tips for doing hard things so you can make marketing easier.
1. Know That You CAN Get Better at Marketing
If you can answer “yes” to 2 questions, then you can become a better marketer.
1.???? “Do you want to do better?”
2.???? “Are you willing to feel the discomfort of putting in more effort and doing things differently?”
2. Do Hard Things When You’re in a Good Mood
Don’t try to do hard things when you’re upset. I know that it’s easier for me to do hard things when I’m in a good mood and have a lot of energy.
3. Challenge and Reward Yourself
Challenging and rewarding yourself will help you get past the brain’s desire to do what’s easy. For example, say to yourself:
“Do I want to work on my marketing and move closer to getting the steady, high-paying clients I deserve, or do I want to compete against hundreds of freelancers for low-paying work on a freelance job site?”
That’s the challenge. After you work on your marketing, give yourself a reward. Go for a walk, have dessert or a drink, or buy something you’ve been wanting for a while. The reward can be anything that makes you happy.
4. Use Your Growth Mindset
If you have a growth mindset, you believe that you can change your freelance future by learning new things, being persistent, and taking the right actions—like marketing your freelance business. You’ll be willing to work hard to reach your goals. You’re much more likely to face challenges head-on and overcome them.
If you find yourself going back to doing what’s easiest, use your growth mindset to get back on track.
5. Minimize Distractions
Don’t multitask, because it reduces your efficiency and the quality of your work. When you’re working on your marketing, turn off notifications for email and social media, your email, and your cell phone. Tell family members or other people you live with not to disturb you between certain hours unless it’s an emergency.
Increase Your Visibility by Writing Meaningful Comments
If you’re just starting to be active on LinkedIn, commenting on other people’s posts is an easy way to increase your visibility. Look for relevant posts by relevant people, like potential clients and other freelancers, to comment on.
Read the post and write a meaningful comment. Meaningful comments share your experiences, insights, or opinion or show support. Find something you can mention in your comment related to the post or linked content.
Here’s an example.
领英推荐
Say that the post is describes 10 ways to be more productive. A comment that says “Great article” is useless.
But if one of the tips is about taking movement breaks, and you write something like: “I’m going to start getting up from my desk and do some yoga poses every few hours,” that’s a meaningful comment.
That’s all you need to do to write a meaningful comment!

About Lori
Hi, I’m Lori, a freelance writer who helps other freelancers get the steady, high-paying clients they deserve.
When I started out, I didn’t know anything about marketing. So I made a lot of mistakes, like marketing to the wrong clients. But because I did a lot of marketing, I was able to become a 6-figure freelancer in 18 months.
As I met other freelancers, I noticed that many freelancers didn’t know much about marketing. So I started The Mighty Marketer to help other freelancers get the clients they deserve.
