The Easy Way to Be First in Line When Clients Need a Freelancer
Isn’t it frustrating when a client you want to work with seem interested in your services but doesn’t hire you? Maybe the client said they’ll put you in their freelance database. Or you discussed a project that the client wanted to start right away. But you never hear from them again.
This happens all of the time and it’s rarely personal.? Hiring a freelancer may have been a priority when the client first contacted you. Then things changed, and other priorities become more important.
Be First in Line for Freelance Jobs
Most of these clients will hire a freelancer at some point. If you want them to choose you, you need to be first in line. This means that the client thinks of you—and not another freelancer—at that moment.
You will be first in line if you follow up regularly with these clients. It only takes a few minutes a week. And it works!
I’ve gotten many steady, high-paying clients by following up—including one client I’ve been working with since 1998. This client hired me nearly two years after he first said he wanted to work with me. Between our first contact and when he hired me, I had been following up regularly. I know many other freelancers who’ve gotten new clients by following up.
Do Professional Follow Up
Professional follow up isn’t not about “selling yourself.” Most of the time you won’t even mention your freelance services.
Easy ways to follow up include:
Sign up for e-newsletters in your industry so content you can share comes right to your inbox and you don’t have to waste time searching for it. Professional associations also have useful content you can share.
You can also comment on news about the client or your contact. Ways to find news to comment on include:
?
Send a Friendly Reminder About Your Services
Once or twice a year, it’s fine to send clients a friendly reminder that you’re available for freelance work. But this must be part of your follow up process and not the only time you contact interested clients. Send a professional, low-key email.
Follow Up Regularly
Follow up with each client about every two months to be first in line when they need freelance help. You can use the same process with current clients and from past clients you haven’t worked with for a while to get more freelance work from them.

Use a Clear, Meaningful Banner Image
If the banner image on your LinkedIn profile is confusing, pretty but irrelevant, or hard to read, the clients you’re trying to attract will move on to the next freelancer on their list. And some freelancers have banner images that aren’t easy to recognize or are clear but unrelated to their work. Even more freelancers put text on their banner images that’s hard to read even on my big laptop.
How to Avoid or Fix this LinkedIn Mistake
LinkedIn’s default banner image is fine—and it’s much better than a confusing, pretty but irrelevant, or hard to read image. If you use a custom image, make sure it:

About Lori
Hi, I’m Lori, a freelance writer who helps other freelancers get the steady, high-paying clients they deserve.
?When I started out, I didn’t know anything about marketing. So I made a lot of mistakes, like marketing to the wrong clients. But because I did a lot of marketing, I was able to become a 6-figure freelancer in 18 months.
?As I met other freelancers, I noticed that many freelancers didn’t know much about marketing. So I started The Mighty Marketer to help other freelancers get the clients they deserve.
