Freelance Friday: Traveling Iceland with My 21 Year Old Son

Freelance Friday: Traveling Iceland with My 21 Year Old Son

Lessons can come from anywhere... even your kid (who's now more of an adult than you are). Last week I had the chance to visit Iceland with my son Alex and we had an amazing time. We spent most of it outdoors hiking, riding ATVs, and horseback riding.

My one big takeaway was how important it is to "unplug". This is something my son has figured out at an early age and something we should all strive to do more often.

Here are some recommendations that I will be implementing in the weeks to come:

  1. Put your phone in the desk drawer for extended periods while you are focusing on important tasks. Out of sight, out of mind. It will be hard at first but gets easier.
  2. Spend at least 1 day per month without your phone in your pocket or purse (schedule it). I did this and no one died, no problems of import went unaddressed, and no one suffered despite my anticipation of all these things happening.
  3. Build a team of supporters. You're not the only one who can handle whatever may show up on your phone (email, text, instant message). Build a team that can support the needs of your freelance business.

And if you were wondering, Iceland was pretty awesome. If you ever want to unplug, it's a great place to do so - especially if you are looking for a remote place to vacation or even freelance.

I was literally just having a conversation with a colleague yesterday about truly unplugging vs. that "I'll be connected during my vacay" that we often do. It's so important. Glad you had the opportunity! Looks amazing.
