Freedom at Work: The Discipline of Mission-Driven Leadership

Leadership is not about micro-managing; it's about having the discipline to run the critical path of a company's mission. When individual contributors and first and second-line leaders have the freedom to work in this way, they can trust each other and focus on what matters most.

Freedom at work is not just about having autonomy over when and where you work but also trusting that everyone is working towards the same goal. As a leader, it's essential to recognize that your team has the discipline to do their job without constant oversight. This means allowing them to make decisions independently and giving them space to be creative in approaching their tasks.

At its core, freedom at work is about trusting your team members. It's about understanding that everyone has different skill sets and approaches that can help move the company forward. As a leader, it's crucial to create an environment where people feel empowered to take risks and innovate without fear of failure or retribution.

When employees have freedom at work, they are more likely to be engaged with their jobs and motivated by their goals. They will also be more likely to stay with the company for extended periods because they feel part of something bigger than themselves.

Ultimately, freedom at work comes from having the discipline needed to run the critical path of a company's mission. Leaders need to trust their teams enough to give them autonomy while providing guidance when necessary. With this leadership style, companies can foster an environment where employees are engaged with their jobs and motivated by their goals - leading to tremendous success for everyone involved!

Building a culture of trust is the key to a successful team and a successful organization. If you need to micromanage your team in order to get the performance you expect, there is a problem. It could be a lack of setting proper expectations, a lack of training, setting people up for failure by hiring the wrong individuals for the role, or a lack of leadership training of that leader.
