How Jews in Ukraine Will Celebrate Passover This Year :?Every year I connect some global occurrence (ex., a pandemic as a plague) to Passover. I can’t say it is my favorite holiday, but as we usher in the spring, this holiday is centered on the freedom the slaves experienced upon escaping from Pharaoh’s Egypt.

I remember hearing a rabbi’s sermon on Passover on how Pharaoh’s Egypt was a state of mind. And in the West, we certainly have the luxury to wrestle with different mental mindsets and ideologies when interpreting history. And while not just an attack on freedom itself, but on national identity, we can’t help but empathize with the suffering in Ukraine. This Russian attack is an assault not only on the identity of a sovereign nation, and its people, but on a way of life. This is what is at stake. And similar to what happened thousands of years ago… the Jews (of Ukraine and Russia) are making an Exodus to the Promised Land.

If anything, the last two years have been hard enough, and we need to be reminded (the pandemic did make us press the “reset” button for a brief period), that our freedom was earned at a hard-fought cost. This is not a given.
