Freedom From Being Busy
Andrew Pepar
The impacts of COVID, AI, climate change, and polarisation shape our world. In this complexity, human trust and connection is paramount. We need leaders with empathy, who work in partnership, to create shared value.
Being busy is always a choice.
Yesterday I was at the blood donation van for my 3 monthly donation and the opening salvo from my appointed nurse was "How are you? Have you been busy?".
It struck me that being busy has become a way of life. An expectation almost, and a shared experience in modern life.
This question gets asked of me in lifts on my way to seeing clients, at the ferry stop, and on the side of the soccer field while watching my daughter.
So I responded with the truth.
"No".
The nurse looked at me quizzically, like I'd just broken a cardinal rule.
"Being busy is a choice", I continued.
And he stopped and thought about it. He gave himself about 3 seconds of contemplation in his busy day.
"I guess you are right", he concluded.
And the truth dawned upon him as it had done upon me. That our external world can be chaotic, demanding and "busy", and we always have a choice internally.
For me, I actually do have a busier week than normal this week: my daughters birthday, my dad in town, work commitments, and a number of new projects.
I choose my mindset and belief about life and work. That I will flow through it all, with ease. And my internal world then gets reflected in my outer world. Most of the time, I don't feel busy, I just move from one experience to the next.
Don't get me wrong, I have my moments. When I choose my mindset internally, I feel like life serves me rather than happens to me.
Enjoy the week ahead, and choose your belief.
