Freedom or Captivity: Is the Internet shutdown morally justified?

Leap back and try to contemplate the events that could unfold if the internet was to be shut down not for a day or two but for months that might culminate in years. I know that very many people would not even want to imagine something like that happening since, to many the internet is their source of livelihood and knowledge among many things. From a social justice perspective, the internet is a safe space that allows for the dissemination of content and freedom of expression.

Currently, the shutdown of the internet is among the hot topics in the United States of America. This is because netizens feel that their leadership in the recent past has caused them nothing but shame. You have probably heard or seen Elon Mask's tweet providing clarity on the possibility of alien existence, or the de-dollarisation notion that is gaining momentum by the day, or the documentaries of the big industry selling filmed sexual content and the "sound of freedom"(I have attached the links below ).

Moral decadence in societies is celebrated and held to high standards. People are no longer ashamed of exposing explicit sexual or nude content just for vengeance or to gain popularity through followers on Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram, Facebook or even Twitter. There is a crude saying among Kenyan youth-being part of them that, "nothing unites a country more than a leaked sex tape or photos". The trending speed of a leaked sex tape or nude photos is wildfire.

For the state we find ourselves in today, I do not blame us. People are naturally influenced by their environment and the content they consume, especially the younger generation. The Internet has played an important role in shaping social values and norms with its vast accessibility and reach. But it is important to recognize that the Internet is not the only cause of the moral decay we are seeing today.?

As I have noted above, there is a dark side to the internet where explicit sexual content and the objectification of individuals for personal gain or revenge have become worryingly widespread. This kind of behaviour is often fueled by a desire for attention, validation or popularity on the various social media platforms available. However, it is important to understand: The internet only amplifies and accelerates existing societal tendencies. ?

It is plausible to imagine significant shifts in societal dynamics if we consider a scenario in which the internet is shut down for an extended period of time. Without the constant influx of explicit content and the ease with which it can be shared, the appeal and proliferation of such behaviour could decline. People would have to be on the lookout for alternative means of self-expression and connection.?

However, it is crucial to approach this issue with caution. The Internet is not inherently evil. Nor should we rely solely on shutting it down as a solution to societal problems. Instead, to empower individuals to navigate the online world responsibly, we must focus on education, awareness and the promotion of digital literacy. We can create a healthier online environment and a more virtuous society by fostering critical thinking skills, empathy and respect for others. ?

To conclude, the potential shutdown of the Internet raises thought-provoking questions about how it affects societal morality. While the Internet has undoubtedly contributed to some moral degradation, it is important to consider the broader context and recognize that the responsibility for cultivating a virtuous society lies with individuals and their choices, not the Internet. We can navigate the complexities of the online world while maintaining our moral compass through education, awareness and responsible digital citizenship.?
