Freeda Social Media Snapshot - May 2024
TikTok is testing the ability for users to upload 60-minute videos with a limited group of users in select markets. The feature marks a shift for the platform, which has been gradually embracing long-form content since its original format of 15-second clips at launch. The increased time limit aims to give creators the opportunity to experiment with new or expanded types of content, such as cooking demos, beauty tutorials, or educational lesson plans, with more flexibility.
Given the robust engagement with Stories, where users seek less permanent and more private ways to interact, Instagram is currently testing a new 'Lately' feature for Stories. This feature aims to prolong the lifespan of Stories beyond the standard 24-hour window. It automatically generates a highlight feed on users' profiles, showcasing their most recent Stories activity. This experiment demonstrates the platform's commitment to innovating in areas where it continues to observe strong user engagement.

Instagram is currently developing a new feature called Peek, designed to allow users to share quick, unedited, and unfiltered snapshots of themselves or their daily lives with friends. These snaps would be directly displayed in their friends' inboxes. Similar to BeReal, Peek is driven by the recognition that many social media users are tired of the curated and heavily edited portrayals of idealized lives, craving more authentic and genuine content in their interactions. As with any internal prototype, it remains uncertain when or if Instagram intends to make Peek available to the public.
In a recent Q&A session on Instagram, Adam Mosseri responded to a question about expanding reach on the platform. He stated that Instagram's current priority is share rate, rather than watch time or the count of likes and comments. This suggests that the algorithm primarily focuses on the likelihood of people explicitly sharing your post, rather than other forms of engagement such as watch time or likes.
X is preparing to make “likes” private on its social network, aiming to incentivize the engagement, while protecting users' public image. The platform hopes that this action will result in increased likes, providing more signals to refine its algorithms and better personalize content to users' interests. However, the private nature of "likes" is only semi-private, as posters will still be able to see who liked their posts and the like count for all their posts and replies. This theoretically allows them to expose someone's likes if they choose to do so.
