Violence Against Women is a Learnt Behaviour!

As a species, we humans have evolved to be empathic, collaborative and supportive. Our innate drive is to help and protect those within our in-group. With this comes a need to find and belong to our group and we quickly learn who belongs and who does not. The flip side of this drive to connect is that for every in-group there is an out-group. These groups are learnt, and we hear, empathise, learn, and remember differently dependent on whether someone is a member of our in-group or out-group.

When boys are taught that girls wear pink and they shouldn’t, that girls are caring and nurturing and they should be ‘manly’ and strong, and the many other stereotypes based on sex, their brains create an in-group and an out-group based on these stereotypes. As adults, these deeply ingrained beliefs translate into judges, doctors, police officers, paramedics and teachers treating people differently based on their biological sex.

To stop violence against women we need to stop teaching boys that they are different. We need to create a culture that values and respects women as equals. In this webinar, we will discuss the evolution of our brains and how aspects of society segregate men and women, strongly embedding the stereotypes that divide us.

We will discuss examples of when these stereotypes are created and reinforced, and how they can be broken down to create a culture of respect and belonging.

I was also hoping this is recorded, a very important topic that needs to be shared . Thankyou for doing it.
