Main Point Up Front:
LinkedIn Premium costs about $240 per year, and includes access to a library of high-quality training courses. Members who complete the courses are awarded professional development certificates from LinkedIn Learning (formerly called Lynda.com).
- Veterans and transitioning service members can click here to get LinkedIn Premium free for one year. Military spouses and caregivers are eligible, too.
- Not a veteran? You can still sign up for a 30-day trial by clicking here.
Serving in the military can be both extremely rewarding, and extremely challenging.
The experience is different for all of us, of course. But sooner or later, most service members return to civilian life. And regardless of what you did while you were in uniform, making the transition into a civilian career can be tough!
Military personnel usually receive a lot of training and hands-on experience. That's good news for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Airwomen, and Marines who benefit from a broad range of professional development courses throughout their careers, and who are trusted with life and death responsibilities virtually every day.
The bad news is that military experience doesn't always translate easily into civilian jobs. Even though much of the work is similar, the jargon used in the military is unfamiliar (and sometimes downright intimidating) for civilians. And it can be difficult for a civilian hiring manager to relate to those high-stakes military job responsibilities that go far beyond what most civilians ever have to deal with.
What can veterans do to bridge this gap? One of the best options is to earn professional certifications that are recognized in the civilian workplace.
Now, for the GREAT NEWS!
LinkedIn contains a library of over ten thousand high-quality professional training courses that can help veterans translate their military experience into civilian terms, while picking up new, in-demand skills along the way.
You can take these courses on a computer, or you can download the app and take them with you to the gym, on your commute, and even on deployment.
For every course you complete, you earn a certificate that you can add to your LinkedIn profile. That makes it much easier to validate your skills, and for potential employers to find you on LinkedIn.
For folks who are considering a career in supply chain management, here are two courses that I always recommend:
If you want to go deeper, there are Learning Paths that include courses from several different instructors. Some of the Learning Paths that are really popular among the veterans I'm talking with right now include:
- Become a Supply Chain Manager
- Advance Your Skills as a Supply Chain Manager
- Become a Project Coordinator
- Become a Project Manager
- Become a Healthcare Project Manager
- Become a Program Manager
- Become a Technical Program Manager
- Become a Six Sigma Yellow Belt
- Become a Six Sigma Green Belt
- Become a Six Sigma Black Belt
- Improve Processes and Deliver Operational Excellence
There are also three Learning Paths that were created specifically for transitioning service members, veterans, and their spouses.
- Transition from Military to Civilian Employment
- Transition from Military to Student Life
- Get Ahead As A Military Spouse
All of these courses and Learning Paths can help you translate military experiences into relevant civilian job skills. And they give you a chance to pick up new skills that can improve your chances for launching a civilian career successfully!

4 年Well done, as a vet myself who made the difficult transition I remember how hard it was to start at the bottom. Bit like a teenager having to go through kindergarten and follow the rules. If you need any further expertise to help let me know.
