The IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) are hosting annual Distinguished Lecture 2017 in Adelaide titled “The Electric Grid of the Future” in collaboration with the School of Engineering, University of South Australia.
Time: Wednesday, the 9th of August 2017, : 5:45 – 7.15 pm (light refreshments from 5.15pm).
Venue: Room HH4‐08, Sir Hans Heysen Building, City West Campus, University of South Australia, Adelaide, 5000.
Presentation Synopsis:
The electric grid is undergoing significant transformation including the introduction of digital technologies, growth of renewables and increasing engagement of electricity customers. An underlying driver of the transformation is the vision for a clean energy future. As the transformation is underway, the electric performance expectations and dependency on the grid is increasing. At the same time, low load growth conditions are creating pressure for utilities to cut cost; the risk for widespread outages from extreme natural events and manmade cyber‐attacks are also on the rise.
This presentation discusses a vision for the electric grid of the future, unique case studies featuring state‐of‐the art deployments and a few of the challenges that remain.
About The Speaker:
Wanda Reder is the Chief Strategy Officer at S&C Electric Company and chairs the IPERC Board of Directors. IPERC is a wholly‐owned subsidiary of S&C that is focused on microgrid development. Prior to S&C, she held leadership positions at two major investor‐owned utilities. Her pioneering work has led to smart grid deployments and wind, solar, utility‐scale battery storage and microgrid system integration.
An IEEE Fellow and member of the National Academy of Engineering, Reder was recognized with the 2014 IEEE Richard M. Emerson Award for her leadership in the IEEE Smart Grid program and in the continued growth of the Power and Energy Society (PES), including the creation of its Scholarship Fund program. Reder was the first woman president of PES, was a member of the IEEE Board of Governors in 2014‐2015, candidate for 2017 IEEE President‐Elect, and is a member of the IEEE Foundation Board of Directors.
