Is the Free Lunch over? Big Tech spends big on publishers for quality training data

So here’s some more news about OpenAI. They have announced a strategic partnership with the Financial Times (FT) to enhance its AI models. FT’s forte is high-quality journalism, and content. This collaboration is set to enrich ChatGPT's responses with attributed content. This makes the responses more reliable and accessible. Now this deal is part of OpenAI's broader initiative to integrate reputable journalistic content into its systems.?

For FT, the partnership is a leap towards integrating AI to improve content discovery and reader engagement. FT’s CEO, John Ridding says “It recognises the value of our award-winning journalism and will give us early insights into how content is surfaced through AI”. He also says “It’s right, of course, that AI platforms pay publishers for the use of their material. OpenAI understands the importance of transparency, attribution, and compensation – all essential for us”.

So what gives for AI companies like OpenAI? Reuters says there’s an "underground race" among big tech firms like Google and Meta. These companies are competing to ethically acquire high-quality training data. Now, this includes content behind paywalls. There's also a pressing need to dodge legal problems, such as copyright infringement. We saw this in the New York Times' lawsuit against OpenAI.

So is this “partnership” a win-win? It seems so for now. News companies need to understand Gen-AI better. AI Tech companies want to avoid expensive lawsuits. For example, we have Microsoft and Axel Springer teaming up to leverage AI, for improving journalistic content and advertising. There is a need in media industry to optimise content creation and distribution and personalize experiences. Microsoft is also developing AI that integrates seamlessly with media workflows. So as these partnerships evolve, they are likely to focus on more refined, efficient, and user-focused media experiences. Now that, is the true win-win for all.?
