Welcome to the Next Generation of 9-1-1. A premiere public safety training and consulting company lead by Kim Turner.
Considering the recent tragedy at the Texas outlet mall, where the suspected shooter exhibited online associations with extremist ideologies and mass shootings, it is crucial that public safety stay vigilant and proactive in our approach to the domestic threat. While this incident has not been classified as an act of domestic terror as it is still being investigated it does mark several parallels to domestic terror. Recognizing potential signs of domestic terrorism and being well-equipped to address them is no longer a choice, but a necessity.
The incident in Texas demonstrates a grim reality: online platforms can be used by individuals to not only express their extremist views but also to research and plan acts of violence. As reported by CNN, Mauricio Garcia, the suspected shooter, left a trail of social media posts supporting Nazism, exhibiting an obsession with firearms, and prior mass shootings. The authorities believe he was wearing a patch associated with right-wing extremist ideology, further emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of the signs and symbols associated with such groups.
Many activist groups in North Texas are now pushing for a thorough investigation into whether this attack was a hate crime. The shooting underscores the critical need for our public safety employees to be well-equipped with the knowledge and training to identify signs of domestic terrorism.
While authorities have stated that the Texas shooting seems to have targeted a location rather than a specific ethnic group, it underlines the critical need for proactive measures in the face of potential domestic terrorism. It is essential that we are not only reactive in times of tragedy but also preventive.
