Is FREE Basics or Going to School IMPORTANT?
I read an interview of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen a fortnight ago.
Prof Sen was vocal in stating that the present NDA government in India, "has been slow with reforms and has not carried out those it promised." Education and healthcare are badly neglected by the NDA government. "India is the only country which is trying to get universally educated and universal healthcare through the private sector. Japan, U.S., Europe, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Hong Kong, Singapore, whether they are politically right or politically left, they all saw the importance of the state in making education and healthcare wifely spread and universal."
However, when Prof. Sen when asked what he thought about Facebook's Free Basics? He said, "You know, in a country where half the population doesn't have a school to go to, to concentrate on the Internet is bit of mistake."
There must be a concerted effort by the think-tanks of the present government to know Want vs. Need!
