A Free Assistant?: How ChatGPT Can Support UC&C Engineers

ChatGPT is all the rage for lovers (and haters) of AI. Only launched last November, it has spawned speculations that it could automate content writing, replace search engines and even destroy academic integrity. And it’s a cool piece of tech. It’s a chatbot that not only gives (mostly) coherent conversation-style answers, but can answer coding prompts, compose songs and write articles in a range of languages, including Polish and, apparently briefly, Welsh.??

Looking past the AI-induced panic, OpenAI’s newest creation is simply a newer version of the AI tools that are already embedded across a number of industries. So what’s the big deal and what does it mean for specialists, like unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) engineers and technical support??

How Is ChatGPT Different?

OpenAI’s use of supervised and reinforcement learning, which both use human trainers, seems to have given its product an edge. ChatGPT remembers previous prompts in a conversation, allowing it to better understand queries in their full context and more accurately simulate a natural conversation. It’s so convincing to some, that there are people who believe the chatbot is sentient.

However, ChatGPT is not perfect. For all of its advances, it occasionally creates nonsensical answers, biased responses and has no knowledge of events after 2021. It’s also still in beta, which means it’s subject to updates and tweaks depending on user feedback. And with Microsoft’s recent third investment in OpenAI and plans to integrate ChatGPT across its products, it may not be free to use for much longer.

Still, it is impressive how ChatGPT is able to create semi-novel answers from its large pool of data instead of simply regurgitating content from elsewhere. It is this skill that makes ChatGPT such a useful UC&C support assistant.

A Problem-Solving Tool

Say, for example, you have a client that has been experiencing dropped calls, jumbled speech and other call quality issues. After checking the most common causes, you’re stumped as to what could be the underlying cause.

You could try a Google search or posting in a tech group to see if anyone has had similar trouble or any novel ideas, but you’re likely to spend a lot of time scrolling through blogs and user posts to find what you’re looking for. On the other hand, you could ask ChatGPT itself what it thinks could be the issue.

Compared to a search engine, ChatGPT answers your prompt directly and doesn’t simply look for keywords in a preexisting document. This means you can save time as ChatGPT does the research for you, so you can spend your valuable time actively troubleshooting and working with the system.?

The result? You’ve learned something new which means the next time you encounter the same problem you’re able to solve it even faster, providing quality customer service and eventually gaining renown as a UC&C superhero.

AI: Are You Onboard?

In a field where you’re often combining services and software from multiple companies, it can be hard to find the support and answers you need to provide the best service to your customers. Working with AI like ChatGPT can give you that extra edge to keep up with changing tech trends and customer demands.

While there’s a lot you can learn from ChatGPT by trial and error, you don’t have to learn it all on your own. Join us at 15:00 GMT on February 10, 2023, for our webinar “Tech Talk: Maximising Efficiency with ChatGPT: Tips for Wildix System Administrators” and we’ll show you how to use ChatGPT to help you with everything from troubleshooting SIP issues to creating and modifying complex dialplans.??
