You need to be prepared to invest in the relationship. Meet and talk to them prior to starting a joint venture partnership. You wouldn’t go on one date and then get married, would you? It's important to get to know each other to make sure you are the right fit for the project, you share the same aims and objectives.  

Be open, meet up, have conversations - it will save lots of upset and arguments later on down the line. Discuss the structure of the project what might go wrong, how you would handle it and importantly discuss timescales!  

Make sure both parties understand what will happen in both the best- and worst-case scenario – it takes a lot of commitment from both sides.
