Frank Turek's Twelve Prophecies
Coda
I’m wrapping up, so to speak, this series of articles on my Twelve Prophecies series of boxed assemblages with a video I made unveiling the contents of one of them. Please visit this Vimeo page to see it.
I can’t add to what I’ve already said in previous entries here, other than to say that I enjoyed this format very much. It accomplished the same goal as my book assemblage work by giving the viewer an art piece made for holding, physically opening, and manipulating the parts. And unlike my altered-book work, these slipcase boxes don’t come with the weighty cultural associations of books.
My place is to provide a counter to oversized artwork made for large walled institution buildings. It may be a little cliche to say this but, with hand-held intimate art, the relatively small physical size has the potential to open a far greater imagined space — and isn’t that the goal of any art piece?
I’m still considering various options for disseminating these 12 pieces. The thought that I’ve had since their inception is to secretly leave them in major museums’ gift shops up and down the east coast. Another idea is to gift them to writers who have sparked my thoughts related to my artwork — or offer them as muses to writers who’d like to write about them. If you have ideas of how I could achieve the aforementioned or have thoughts on how I should disperse them, I’d be open to hearing about it. Aside from the gifting ideas, I would not object if an art collector or curator would like to acquire them.?
