The two nations are stuck in an escalating diplomatic standoff, with disagreements over military, historical, and immigration issues. Both countries have their own narratives about the issues, and they often clash in the open.
Algeria, which recently arrested Franco-Algerian critic Boualem Sansal, recently condemned planned joint military drills between France and Morocco near its border, seeing them as a direct challenge amid long-standing tensions over France’s pro-Moroccan stance on Western Sahara. This added to the growing strain over the unresolved colonial grievances, as France’s growing far-right influence has deepened hostility between the two nations.
Meanwhile, a push from France’s far-right politicians, driven by hardliner Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, to revoke the 1968 Franco-Algerian Treaty, which grants Algerians preferential immigration rights, has added another layer to the conflict.
