Franck Marchis Receives 2024 Carl Sagan Center Director's Award at Drake Awards Ceremony
SETI Institute
Leading humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe...
The SETI Institute recently hosted the prestigious 2024 Drake Awards, celebrating exceptional contributions to SETI and astrobiology. Dr. Andrew Siemion was honored for his pioneering work in SETI and radio astronomy alongside the 2024 SETI Forward recipients. Dr. Franck Marchis, a planetary astronomer known for research on exoplanets and asteroids with moons, was awarded the Carl Sagan Center Director's Award. Marchis co-founded and is Chief Scientific Officer for Unistellar, fostering a global community of over 12,000 citizen astronomers. He is also a core member of the SETI Institute's outreach team, hosting the weekly social media livestream SETI Live and the public lecture series SETI Talks. He frequently engages with leading media outlets to explain complex science to the public.
Keeping an Eye on Comet A3, the Next Naked-Eye Comet Candidate
In early 2023, a new comet took stargazers by surprise. Called Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinan-Atlas), this icy visitor was discovered by two separate observatories in South Africa and China. Hailing from the distant Oort Cloud, Comet A3 had scientists and amateurs alike wondering if it would be the next naked-eye comet to light our skies, but it was still too early to tell last year. As 2024 unfolds, we eagerly anticipate whether Comet A3 will deliver the breathtaking celestial display we have all been hoping for!
SETI AIR Program: Call for Submissions
The SETI AIR program expands upon the SETI Institute's mission to explore the origin and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and to share this knowledge with the world. The SETI AIR program connects contemporary artists with SETI Institute researchers and facilitates an exchange of ideas to catalyze new perspectives, insights, and modes of comprehension.
SETI AIR Newsletter - May 2024
This year, the SETI AIR program is launching a series of new residencies, each focused on a discipline, or “territory,” of creative practice. The first residency off the starting block is Cosmic Consciousness, which interweaves language and the written word with the exploration of consciousness and intelligence. Right now, the “I” in SETI is a placeholder for technology, as we’re searching the cosmos for technosignatures. But - what does “intelligence” actually mean? Poets, authors, and philosophers are uniquely suited to delve into this existentialist question. I look forward to seeing this residency come to life. Submission details at the link below.

Big Picture Science: Beyond the Standard Model
Ever heard of a beauty quark? How about a glueball? Physics is full of weird particles that leave many of us scratching our heads. But these tiny particles make up everything in the quantum world and in us and are the basis of the fundamental scientific theory called The Standard Model. But it doesn’t explain everything. It can’t account for dark matter or dark energy, for example. We find out whether new physics experiments might force us to rewrite the Standard Model. Plus, we discuss a NASA proposal to fly spacecraft close to the sun in search of new physics.
The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand, and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe and the evolution of intelligence.
