You've heard the saying, happy wife, happy life, right? It can also go the other way. That is why when I meet with my clients, I always ensure to make this a family project and decision. If my client is married, I always encourage them to bring their spouse to the table.?
I try to examine what you're looking for and what they're looking for, because no matter how long you've been married, and no matter how long you’ve known your spouse, their ideas of business ownership may differ from yours. The criterias for the business and what’s important to you may be very different from the criterias that are important to them.??
Family First
It is very important that everybody's on the same page because even if you are going to be the one running and operating this business, and your spouse says they are not going to be involved in the operation of the business, it will inevitably impact your entire family and the lifestyle of your family.?
Several years ago, I worked with a gentleman who was looking to be a franchise owner, and all of his previous work experience had been in cafeteria management. When he and his spouse joined our meeting, he said that he would like to find a franchise in the food industry.?
Why? Because that's where his experience was. However, his wife also had an idea of what this business should look like in terms of the lifestyle they would have through business ownership. As a cafeteria manager he was never home for dinner, he missed countless family functions as well their kid’s activities. So it was not surprising that the one request that she had was that he be home every night for dinner and that he not work weekends.?
Immediately, I saw the red flags knowing that we would not be able to find a franchise in the food industry and have him home by dinner time every day. If his wife had not been at our meeting, we would've never known that that was something that was very important to her.
Exploring Ownership Together
I encourage you as you start exploring business ownership, that you bring your spouse along the process so that it becomes a journey for the both of you. Even if you and your spouse have different ideas of what business ownership should look like, at least everyone will be on the same page and can agree on the ultimate goal - what the business will do for the family.?
