France becomes first country to end oil and gas production by 2040
21 December, 2017
France has become the first country to end oil and gas exploration and production on French territories by 2040.
Lawmakers passed legislation that bans the renewal of any existing concession beyond the cut off date 22 years from now, with new exploration permits banned from now.
France produces approximately 6m barrels of hydrocarbons per year, or around 1% of its consumption.
The country will continue to import and refine oil.
