France achieved a total of 3.15GW new PV capacity in 2023

France added around 921MW of installed PV capacity in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to the latest data released by French grid operator Enedis. According to the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME), a cumulative of total 2.2GW of PV capacity was added between January and September 2023, and for the full year of 2023, France added 3,135MW of new PV capacity, bringing the cumulative total of installed PV capacity to 19GW.

Enedis said that there is still some room for fluctuation in installed PV capacity in France in the fourth quarter of 2023, so the actual number could be higher. The grid operator said a third of last year's installed capacity (around 1,122MW) came from PV systems under the country's own-use program. Of that self-consumption PV capacity almost doubled to 2,256 MW. France's solar energy association Enerplan expects France's PV installation target for 2024 will far exceed 4GW.

The French PV industry has made significant progress over the past few years, largely benefiting from government support and investment. France has been striving to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, and as a result, the demand for renewable energy continues to grow. The government has created various incentives, including the provision of subsidies and favorable purchase prices for electricity, to promote the development of PV. However, the French PV industry also faces a number of challenges. In particular, factors such as changes in PV installation policies and reductions in subsidies have made the business model for PV power generation more challenging over the past years. In addition, the French PV market has been affected by price fluctuations in international markets.

In the future, the French PV industry still has great potential. With the French government's commitment to renewable energy, it is expected that PV power generation will continue to be supported and encouraged by the government. As a result, the French PV industry is expected to continue to grow and become an important part of the French energy industry in the coming years.
